The anti-microbial properties of Copper have been observed since ancient times. Egyptian and Babylonian soldiers would place copper and bronze shavings in their wounds to reduce infection and speed up healing.
Copper is known for killing microbes and has been shown to help limit the spread of E. coli, salmonella, and influenza. Studies have shown that when Copper comes into contact with a germ, it has the ability to release reactive ions that puncture the exterior of the germ. The ions can then access the inside of the germ, deactivating its genetic material.
Research has shown that Copper could potentially fight the new Coronavirus, as well. A recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that the virus lasted on Copper for just a few hours, compared with days on stainless steel and plastic.
How can CUVU Anti-Pollution masks help?
CUVU Masks have ventilation components that have Copper incorporated into the polymers. We manufacture our own proprietary components through a process known as filament deposition technology, where 20% Copper powder is incorporated into the plastic components as they are manufactured.

We think masks incorporated with Copper are a great idea, but of-course have to be cautious when it comes to expectations around a relatively unknown Coronavirus. Copper, and even face masks in general, should not give people a false sense of security. Other important precautions include hand and face hygiene, physical distancing and general common sense when it comes to a virus that is airborne and not fully understood.
If nothing else, Copper is a fantastic fashion choice and pairs well with our CUVU Anti-Pollution Masks which rely on PM0.3 filters to block ultrafine airborne particles. The 3M filtering material and technology used in making CUVU anti-pollution masks make them ideal for filtering not only common air pollutants, but also ultra-fine particulate matter PM0.3, including particles as small as bacteria and some viruses.
