Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is an Anti-Pollution mask?
Anti-pollution masks filter out some of the pollutants and allergens that contaminate the air that we breathe. They are typically worn outdoors and even sometimes indoors where air quality problems exist - they include older buildings with moldy air, or outdoor air coming in containing dust, pollen or other pollutants.
CUVU masks are superior to other anti-pollution masks in that they have a 2-way filtration of air through the filter chambers - both the inhaled as well as exhaled air is filtered. This protects others from exhaled air coming from the mask user. Other anti-pollution masks with exhalation valves do not protect others in case of a viral pandemic.
How do CUVU masks work?
CUVU re-usable masks come with replaceable 3M filters rated at PM0.3, which means that they attract and capture Particulate Matter lager than 0.3 microns. They have an electrostatic charge that captures particles three times better than non-electrostatic filters found in other filter masks.
Particles larger than 0.3 microns include: Bacteria, Dust, Mold spores, Particles carrying odors, Particles carrying viruses, Pet dander, Pollen and Smoke.
Please note that some pathogens (bacteria and viruses) are smaller than 0.3 microns and may not be filtered.
Why not just use a cloth mask?
Cloth masks and disposable masks do not filter the air that's breathed in, they only slow down the force of air being exhaled out and reduce the size of droplet clouds around a person - they are great for reducing societal pathogen spreads through the air, but they don't significantly reduce the risks for the person wearing them.
Cloth masks and disposable masks do not form a tight seal with your face, which allows unfiltered air in/out.
How comfortable are CUVU masks compared to other masks?
We have made it a priority to create a mask that provides a great seal rivaling medical PPE masks. The mask should be worn stretched against the face to provide full protection against environmental contaminants, ensuring that all inhaled air comes in through the filter valves. Because of the emphasis on seal and fit, some may find that the mask creates more pressure against the face compared to loose fitting cloth as well as most "surgical-type" masks. However, most people will adjust to the mask after some time.
If the mask feels uncomfortable at the beginning, we suggest wearing it slightly looser, however at no time should the mask fall off the nose - the mask should be worn such that it completely covers the nose and mouth openings at all time.
How can I ensure a good fit with the CUVU mask?
CUVU masks are designed to be flexible and one-size fits all for adults with an average face size and shape.
Smaller-faced adults may find that the lower parts of the mask extend out from their chin area - this is normal as long as the lower part of the cheeks and chin are still in full contact with the inside of the mask.
The tightness of the mask can be adjusted using the adjustable straps in the back of the head.
What are the materials used in the CUVU mask?
Mask body: reinforced neoprene foam (Original and PRO masks), TPU medical-grade rubberized plastic (Style and Evolution masks)
3M filters: melt-blown polypropylene non-woven fabric
Plastic accessories: vegetable-derived poly-lactic polymer
Copper-coloured valves and filter holders contain 20% copper powder weight by weight, blended into the polymer composition
How do I replace the filters?
Take out the existing filters by removing the filter holders from the inside of the mask (twist & pull up).
Place the new filter fabrics over the opening and secure in place with the filter holders (twist & push in).
What is the best way to clean/sanitize the CUVU mask?
Sanitizing with rubbing alcohol: use a cotton pad to gently rub minimum 70% ethyl alcohol onto the surface of the mask. You do not need to disassemble the filters for this and it's ok if you get alcohol on the filters.
Washing with water and soap or dish detergent: remove the filters from the mask before exposing to water. Gently wash the mask surface with soapy water and allow to air dry. You can still use the mask if wet as well. It's ok if the filters get wet, but we recommend that they be removed and allowed to air dry before/after use.
CAUTION: do not use any appliances to wash/sanitize your mask - do not use a dryer, washing machine, dishwasher or microwaves. Do not iron or dry-clean.
How many times can the CUVU mask be re-used?
You can reuse the mask many times if you use, clean and keep it with care.
Filter media must be replaced regularly.
How many times can each filter media be re-used?
In the age of a viral pandemic, experts agree that viruses can live on some surfaces for days. If you do decide to re-use a filter after some time, we recommend following the recommendations of health authorities.
As an anti-pollution mask filtering commonly found pollutants, allergens and germs, the filters can be reused a number of times depending on environmental air conditions. It is recommended that each filter not be used more than 1-2 weeks or about 15 hours of total use.
Will the filter lose its function after getting wet?
The electro-static force embedded in the filter media is very strong and will not lose its function after getting wet. However, the filtration efficiency will decrease gradually if exposed repeatedly to water. It is recommended to always remove the filter while washing the mask with water and avoid getting soap on the filters. If the filter does get wet, remove it and allow to air dry before use.
Are CUVU masks government approved?
No. CUVU masks are not for medical use and are for consumer-grade use only.
Are CUVU masks comparable to medical N95 masks?
No. N95 masks may have similar filtering capabilities as PM0.3 filters, but they have been tested specifically for fit and undergone regulatory approvals by various health authorities.
Are there any precautions before using CUVU masks?
Do not use if you have any breathing pre-conditions
Do not use if you have any allergies against synthetic materials such as plastics
Discontinue use if having difficulty breathing during use, especially during hot and humid conditions
Do not use in a medical setting where medical protective equipment is warranted
Do not use on persons who are unable to remove the mask independently
Do not use in an industrial setting or with chemical fumes
Do not leave mask in a hot area (such as a car) or under the sun for an extended period of time
